Guide to Online Craps

Craps is generally recognized as the ultimate thrill seekers casino game.  It’s associated with ‘high-fives’ and a lot of noise within American casinos. It is, indeed, a lot of fun.  Complicated for beginners but engrossing to those that have learned the game and appreciate all the bet opportunities.

Online craps is no different.  You can start playing now, for free, by selecting one of the craps site links at the bottom of this page but, before throwing yourself into the deep end we hope you will find our guide to be of some help.

The Basics of Craps

How to Play Craps

In craps one player (the ‘shooter’) rolls a pair of dice and the players around the table bet on what that player’s roll will produce.

The first roll – that first roll, the ‘come-out throw’, sets the stage for the rest of the game.  Beforehand players can place their chips on the ‘Pass Line’ or the ‘Don’t Pass Bar’ sections of the craps layout.

On the first roll:

  • If the dice sum total adds up to either 7 or 11, then players who backed the ‘Pass Line’ win.
  • If the sum total comes to 2, 3 or 12 (these combinations are known as ‘craps’), players who bet on the ‘Don’t Pass’ bar win.
  • If the shooter rolls any other number (4,5,6,8,9,10), that number becomes the ‘Point.’

All bets placed on the pass line are now wagered on the ‘Point’ and players can also wager on other bets, such as set sums or other combinations of their choosing.  There is a plentiful number of bet options on the craps table layout.

The shooter then throws the dice again – until either the ‘Point’ or a 7 is thrown:

  • If Point is the result, players will be rewarded winnings on their pass line bets and the shooter then begins again with another come-out throw.
  • If the shooter throws a 7, then all bets on the table are collected and the dice are passed to another shooter.

Craps Glossary

In brick and mortar casinos understanding all of the following phrases would be helpful.  However, they are not so commonly used when playing online.

Boxman – The person who supervises the game and handles the cash and chips.

Stickman – The person operating the ‘stick’ which is used to push the dice around the layout. He controls the tempo of the game, calls out the results, works the dice and urges players to be decisive.

Dealers – alongside the stickman will be one or two dealers who are charged with managing the bets, paying winners and collecting losing wagers.

Shooter That’s the name of the player charged with throwing the dice.  Online, players might not share a table with other players, so there may not be an actual shooter, but instead the dice may roll when the sole player determines.

Come-out roll The shooter’s first dice roll is known as the come-out roll, it determines the rest of the game.

Craps This is a two-dice combination where the total adds up to either 2, 3 or 12.

Hard Way – Players can wager that the two dice will land the ‘hard way’. It simply means the numbers match, as in a pair of 2’s.

Why Play Craps

Best Craps Bets:  Some craps bets feature a very low house edge.  Of course this means players are more likely to win or break even over a period of time – this makes craps one of the best casino games from a value perspective.

Action:  Craps is a fast-paced game with plenty of action. Few casino games, if any, can match the thrill of a lengthy hot streak.  As with Roulette players can win very large sums of money quickly when things go well.

Craps Odds

So why is craps such a great game for punters?  Well, in short it can be massively exciting when going on the proverbial ‘roll’ but, more importantly, some bets feature a very low house edge.  The even-money shots actually have a house edge of less than 1.41 percent.

It gets even better when you realise the Pass Odds/Come odds (2/1 on a 4 or 10, 3/2 on a 5 or 9 and 6/5 on a 6 or 8) works out at zero percent margin for the house.  That’s right, the house has no edge. The zero margin scenario is the same for Don’t Pass Odds/Don’t Come Odds.

Craps Strategies

As a player you have to be clear about what you want to achieve during your time at the table. This is a fun game and the rewards can be big – the odds on offer for a 2 or a 12 being thrown are 30/1 – but if you can detach yourself from the fun aspect you can concentrate on winning and, with this game featuring zero house edge, craps really is the ultimate game to beat the house.

Combinations

Essentially craps is built around the dice roll of seven, because it is the most easily rolled dice combination.
